Part Three: The GR8 8

Assess your world for learnability.

Let's get more specific with Ned's 8 key points. Go through these in a journal or in conversation to see what you can discover about yourself and your practice of learning.

1. I FEEL OK

How do you feel about your basic needs? Are you in a good position to take on new learning?
What situations cause you discomfort to the point of disengagement?
What distracts you?

2. IT MATTERS

Does what you are doing matter? To who? What does it change?
Do you find your work to be fulfilling?
Is your impact positive?

3. IT'S ACTIVE

Are you able to physically engage with your work/learning?
Is your brain stimulated or do you avoid tasks?
Are you a social learner? Do you engage in learning better when in groups?

4. IT STRETCHES ME

Is your work challenging?
How much of what you do is easy for you?
What is something that is hard but doable that you want to try?

5. I HAVE A COACH

Do you have a good support system?
Who encourages you? Who challenges you?
Do you manage your time well?

6. I HAVE TO USE IT

Where do you NEED to improve? What happens if you don't?
What skill of yours needs an upgrade?
How do you like to practice? Be tested?

7. I THINK BACK ON IT

Do you intentionally reflect? Journal? Meditate?
When do you find yourself being most able to reflect?
Do you reflect on content, experience or emotions most?

8. I PLAN MY NEXT STEPS

Do you make plans? Set goals?
How do you put a new skill to use?
What's your best experience of going from learning something new, to achieving a good level of competence?

Part Four: Prospect & Refuge

Your environment can support or harm your ability to hunt down new learning.

You need two types of environment to take full advantage of your innate, animal ability to learn.

1. Prospect
A place to take in the big picture, interact, gather, collaborate and pursue .

2. Refuge
A safe, comfortable area to retreat for rest, reflection, adaptation, planning and healing.

Use your journal and your creativity to DO three things:

1. Draw a picture of your ideal learning environment

2. Make a blueprint of where you do your most work. Experiment with it and add whats missing.

3. Change one physical space (really) at work or at home to ensure that you have access to both prospect and refuge.

Happy hunting.

Part Five: Be like the Honey Badger

Using tools is the mark of an intelligent species.

What tools are you utilizing to get better results?

Go be a LEARNAVORE.

  1. Put yourself in environments that allow you to Prospect and Refuge.

  2. Align with NED's GR8 8

  3. Source tools to leverage your effort into smarter results.
